Symptoms of Diabetes

We have already understood the basics of diabetes in Part-1 article. We shall now further discuss and try to know more about prevention and care of this disease.

Watch out for the below common symptoms and visit your doctor to look out whether you have got diabetes. Normally, the doctor recommends going for a simple sugar test to check the glucose levels in your body.

  • Polydipsia or Excessive thirst – This happens due to increase in concentration of glucose. The brain then starts sending signal to dilute it making us feel thirsty.
  • Polyphegia or Increased hunger In order to cope with high sugar levels in blood, the body demands more insulin which is also responsible for stimulating hunger.
  • Polyuria or Frequent urination – This happens when the body tries to get rid of excess glucose present in the blood by excreting it through urine.
  • Weight fluctuation i.e Sudden weight loss or gain – Increased appetite contributes to weight gain while excessive loss of water, protein and metabolism of body fat results in weight loss.
  • Blurry vision : This happens when the body fluid is extracted from the tissues including the lenses of our eye.
  • Increased unexplainable fatigue and Irritability : This happens due to inefficient supply of glucose to our brain and other organs. This makes us feel uneasy and extremely tired even without any physical activity.
  • Poor wound healing : The immune system in our body is shattered, as the high blood sugar does not allow growth of the white blood cell (WBC). WBC is responsible for body immune system. Thickening of blood vessels occur if diabetes is prolonged without treatment resulting in improper circulation of blood in different parts of the body.
  • Frequent Infections : This again happens due to poor immune system caused by high blood sugar.

Care for Diabetes

First and foremost you should be heeding to the advice of your doctor and follow strictly all rules and medications prescribed by him. Apart from this, you can follow the below guidelines for both prevention and care of diabetes.

· Periodical check ups for knowing the level of glucose in your body

· Periodical check up for control of blood pressure and ECG

· Moderate exercise for controlling obesity

· Giving up smoking altogether

· Cleaning your foot with warm water and being hygienic. Not to venture with bare foot outside.

· Cleaning minor cuts and sores with mild antiseptic

· Avoiding undue stress and pressure

· Special prenatal care and during pregnancy

As of now, diabetes cannot be cured once it occurs . Therefore prevention is always best than cure. However, by being conscious and keeping good control of diabetes all the times, you will be able to prevent serious complications of diabetes affecting your nerves, heart, blood vessels, eyes or kidneys. After all, millions of people around the globe have succeeded in living a fairly normal life even with this fatal disease.

Diabetes has almost become a household name to many. You won’t find people giving you a surprised look when you talk to them about diabetes. This disease is so common in today’s world that many people think Oh! It is just another disease and take it lightly. Beware! That is not the case in reality. Diabetes is a fatal disease and if left unattended can be life threatening.

Millions of people live with diabetes around the globe. The good news is one can live fairly a normal and healthy life even with diabetes.

Let us understand the basics first.

What is Diabetes ?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the human body either under performs or do not produce at all a hormone called insulin. This hormone is required for conversion of glucose (sugar), starches and other food into energy. The pancreas produces insulin.

Causes of Diabetes

Pancreas in our body produces a hormone called insulin. Insulin maintains a very narrow range of blood glucose level in our body. When the pancreas fails to produce this insulin or when the insulin produced does not work effectively, the blood glucose level becomes very high. This confirms diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type -1 diabetes

Type- 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes

In Type 1 diabetes, the cells in the pancreas responsible to make insulin are destroyed, causing severe shortage of insulin. While it is still not clear, it is broadly accepted in the medical world that the body attacks its own cells in the pancreas triggered due to reaction. This reaction could be due to infection with a specific virus or bacteria or exposure to toxins or due to some other reasons. These are only possibilities as nothing has been proven yet.

In Type 2 diabetes, the cells in the body fail to be stimulated by the action of insulin. In other words, these cells firmly show resistance to insulin. Due to this, insulin is over produced under excitement and finally the insulin manufacturing cells gets exhausted in the pancreas. Therefore, there is a situation where there is lack of insulin.

Gestational Diabetes takes place only in pregnant woman. These are mainly due to changes in the body that are taking place during pregnancy and therefore it becomes absolutely essential to get prenatal care and balanced proper diet throughout the pregnancy.

Diabetes if left unattended, can lead to severe complications. You will find bucket full of health issues if you ignore diabetes. Some of them are as below:

  • Can lead to blindness due to eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Can lead to amputation of arms or legs due to nerve disease (neuropathy)
  • May have to receive dialysis treatment frequently due to kidney disease (nephropathy)
  • Can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

The idea behind listing the above is not to make you panic but to make you aware how dreaded this disease can be. If you are already a diabetic, you just need to follow simple rules to lead a normal life . If you are lucky as me of not having this disease, you can still follow these guidelines for prevention of this disease. Please continue to read Part-2 of this article for symptoms and guidelines.
