There are always two sides of every thing in life. If there is happiness then there is unhappiness, if there is peace then there is stress etc. In short, one needs to not only accept but also be in control of every shades of life.

Depression is one of the grave mental illnesses in today’s world. In other words, it is simply a situation where one feels mentally drained with tons of negative emotions. If left unattended, depression can lead to extreme case of suicide.

Let us try to understand why depression occurs at its first place.  Depression occurs due to variety of reasons. It could be just one single reason or many reasons at a time. It is indeed a medical challenge to actually find out the root of depression before your doctor recommends his prescription.

There can be thousands of reasons for a person to become depressed. Let us study some of the common reasons as below so that we can effectively learn to overcome this dreadly disease.

  • Loss of a loved one especially when the loved one is a kid is one of the most common reasons for depression.
  • Other losses like parts of the body due to accident, job, money, prestige, house, vehicle etc can also cause depression
  • Loneliness or self-feelings that one is not cared enough also leads to depression.
  • Sometimes a depressed mood is triggered in case of severe illness or when the person recovers after a near death situation.
  • Pessimistic views of life or lack of self-esteem also invites depression
  • Sleep deprivation, fatigue, excessive stress, anxiety can show symptoms of depression.
  • There have been cases of depression in individuals who have been given wrong or over dose of medicines for some other disease.

If you have a closer look at the above you will find that the  mind plays an important part in causing depression. In other words, if you learn to tame your mind and force it to correct thinking, depression can be kept at bay.

Now the million dollar question is whether taming of mind is that easy ? In fact is it possible ? The answer is both yes and no. However, the good news is that you can control your thoughts just enough to prevent or get rid of depression. I am trying to give below couple of simple yet effective steps to make you more cheerful and happy.

  • Try to be happy regardless of the situation you are in. I know it is very difficult to implement in practical life but you have to understand that there are many things, which are beyond our control. Sometimes, it is simply good to wait and watch over the happenings rather than rushing and taking complex decisions.
  • Positive thinking helps a lot in dealing with depression. Instead of piling up your receptive mind with tons of garbage i.e negative thinking, it is better to visualize positive things happening around you. In case you are in a grave situation, you can always console yourself saying tomorrow will be a better day. Cling on to the word Hope, I promise it would be reassuring.

So cheer up.. Depression over powering you ??  NO WAY …. Kill this disease at volleys of positive thoughts and see the difference… Remember, you can if think you can.
