
The term “physical fitness” can be used in two very close meanings: one being general fitness which is the state of well-being and health and specific fitness which is a definition that is task oriented based on the overall ability to perform specific aspects of occupations or sports. In all actuality, physical fitness is a term that is used to relate to the capacity of the blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles to function, when they are at their optimum efficiency. In earlier years, the term “fitness” was being defined as the capacity to carry out one’s activities throughout the day without any undue fatigue.
Increased leisure time, automation, and lifestyle changes which followed the industrial war actually meant that this criterion was really no longer sufficient. Now, the key is optimum efficiency. The term “physical fitness” now is being defined as the body’s own ability to function effectively and efficiently in leisure and work activities, to resist hypokinetic diseases, to be healthy and to meet certain emergency situations.
General Fitness
Regular exercise, proper nutrition and exercise, proper rest for recovery physically within set parameters which are allowed by the genome, results in physical fitness. There are often times that physical fitness is divided into several types:
- Agility
- Accuracy
- Balance
- Body Composition
- Coordination
- Cardiovascular Endurance
- Joint Range of Motion and Flexibility
- Speed
- Power
- Stamina
- Strength
There are also many sources that are also known to cite emotional and mental health as a rather important factor in your fitness overall. Often, there are times, that this information is presented in textbooks as a triangle that is created from three sub-sections which are known to represent emotional, physical and mental fitness. However, one can be physically fit and still suffer from emotional problems or a mental illness. In order to have the “ideal triangle”, you are going to need to be balanced in each area.
Specific Fitness
Task oriented or specific fitness is one’s ability to perform in a certain activity with a reasonable amount of efficiency such as military or sports service. The athletes are prepared to perform well in their sports, by participating in specific training. Police officers and fire fighters also have to undergo fitness testing on a regular basis in order to determine whether or not they are fully capable of meeting the physically demanding tasks that are required for the job before they are able to be employed.
All-in-all, maintaining proper fitness, physically and emotionally is very important to your health. Most of you out there have families and young children that really look ward to those summer days when you are able to play ball with them and chase them around in the yard, if you don’t practice proper fitness routines, you aren’t going to be able to enjoy all of those special times playing with your children because you aren’t going to have the strength or energy to do so.
