Having sound health is something we all want. However, not all of us are that lucky. While there are people suffering from some sort of disease right from their birth, others actually invite such diseases due to poor lifestyle and habits.

High blood pressure can be broadly classifed as a lifestyle disease. Before we actually discuss about this disease, we need to know what is high blood pressure ?

Every one of us has normal blood pressure. This normal pressure is required for the circulation of blood to our whole body. However, the problem starts when this pressure rises out of this normal limit. When the pressure is high, the heart is pumping blood harder, which in turn leads to hardening and constricting of the arteries. Imagine the waves in the ocean dashing against the hard rocks forcefully. You will, find in the long run, that the waves actually dent even these stubborn hard rocks. High blood pressure, does the something similar to this - the blood forces itself more against the walls of the blood vessel damaging it in due course of time.

One of the greatest disadvantages is that high blood pressure or hypertension usually does not have any symptoms. This makes the matter worse because, many people do not know that they have already high blood pressure and realise only when it is too late.  That is why high blood pressure has been rightly termed as  Silent Killer.

But here is some good news !  Fortunately, man is also capable of inventing solutions as much as inventing problems. You can definitely follow the below basic guidelines to make sure that you lead a healthy trouble free life.

•    You need to be aware that the normal rate of your blood pressure should be not more than 120/80. Anything upto 140/90 is pre-indication of hypertension. Above 140/90, it is established that you have high blood pressure and the more the reading goes, the more critical condition you are. The best way to play safe is by  going to your doctor to have periodical check up especially if you are above 35-40 years.

•    Obesity is the mother of all diseases and it includes high blood pressure as well. To control it is entirely in your hands. A proper balanced diet with daily routine exercise, which can be just 30 minutes daily brisk walking will do, wonders.

•    Smoking and Drinking is a major contributor to this disease. You can definitely stay away from this, which is simply ruining your inbuilt systems like the nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system etc. Aim high in life rather than trying to get a fake high by smoking and drinking.

•    You need to control your salt intake in your diet to fight high blood pressure. High consumption of salt is equivalent to intake of poison for all people suffering from high blood pressure.

•    Heredity and Old age are another factors contributing to this disease. Though this is not entirely your fault, you can definitely keep things under control by having periodical check up.

I am sure with these basic guidelines, you will be able to live a long healthy life. After all someone rightly said.. health is wealth !
