In Part-1 of this article
, we learnt about the role of kidneys, causes of kidney failure and its symptoms.

As with any organs of your body, proper care can lead to prevention of any malfunction to your kidneys.

Here are some of the simple guidelines for some of us who are already caught in the wrong foot and have invited this disease. You can still considerably save lot of renal function if your kidneys have just started malfunctioning, that is if the disease is in its early stages.

  • Diet : You need to be aware that some part of your daily diet may speed up your

kidney failure.

a) Protein : Protein is very important to your body, which helps in repairing muscles and fight disease. You are already aware of from Part -1 of this article that healthy kidneys remove wastes from the blood but leaves protein. However, impaired kidneys may not be able to separate protein from the wastes. It is for this reason, your doctor may advise you for less intake of protein in case of kidney disease as the kidneys will have less work to do. Again, leaving out protein entirely from your diet would invite other complications. You need to take advise from your doctor and follow the same strictly about your daily normal diet.

b) Sodium : This is found mainly in salt and other foods. You should limit your foods containing high levels of sodium so as to NOT to increase your blood pressure.

c) Potassium : Potassium is mainly found in fruits and vegetables. While healthy kidneys measure potassium in your blood and throw out the excess mounts, diseased kidneys may fail to do so. This in turn, can affect can affect your heart rhythm. Therefore, you should curtail your intake of potassium in your diet as well.

d) High fat Diet: Excess cholesterol can also cause kidney failure. In order to maintain healthy levels of cholesterol in your blood, avoid high fat diet.

  • Quitting Smoking: You will hardly find any major disease in the medical dictionary without having smoking as one of the reasons behind that disease. It may prove fatal if you do not quit smoking once you know you have malfunctioning of your kidneys.
  • Controlling your glucose level in your blood: You need to ensure to maintain level of glucose in your blood, which is also a major cause of kidney failure.
  • Obesity : Keep yourself physically fit by doing moderate exercise daily as advised by your doctor.
  • Healthy Kidneys produce hormone called EPO, which are required to stimulate your bones to produce red blood cells. Red blood cells have a critical function of carrying oxygen through out your body. You may need to take injections of EPO externally as the diseased kidneys may not make enough EPO.

Unfortunately, chronic kidney disease generally cannot be cured. As the malfunction becomes severe and the kidney stops functioning altogether, you will need to undergo dialysis or kidney transplantation.
