Kidneys

A normal human being has a pair of kidneys in his body. These vital organs perform several functions and are responsible to keep the blood clean and chemically balanced in our body.

Understanding the basics of kidney functioning can help you in keeping them healthy.

What exactly is role of the kidneys?

These bean shaped organs just about the size of your fist are located below the rib cage and near the middle of your back

The kidneys are indeed complicated reprocessing machines. On an average, it process about 200 quarts of blood to remove 2 quart of waste products and water. The waste products and water accumulates in the bladder and eventually thrown out of your body by urine.

You can imagine your kidneys being a very sensitive filter, which keeps on filtering the blood so that there is a constant flow of only pure uncontaminated blood to other vital organs of the body. These minute filters occur in tiny units called the nephrons in the kidney. Every kidney has an average of about one million nephrons. It is indeed worth mentioning that a complicated chemical exchange takes place while separating the waste materials and water and subsequently going to the urinary system from the blood.

The waste in the blood comes from the food we eat and from the normal breakdown of the active tissues. It is a cyclic process. Your body keeps on sending the waste to the blood after taking what it wants. From hereon, the job of the kidneys starts of not only removing these wastes but also ensuring to pass it on to the urinary system.

Understandably, if your kidneys are not performing their duties or malfunctioning, wastes would remain in the blood which results in severe damages to the body over a period of time.

Why do Kidneys fail?

Kidneys fail to function due to kidney related diseases. The nephrons or the filtering units are the targets of attack thereby making it loose its filtering capacity. Nephrons can be damaged instantly due to sudden and severe poisoning or due to fatal injuries. However, most kidney diseases destroy the nephrons slowly and silently. Only after the first symptoms start, the damages become apparent. And this could take several years or even several decades.

Causes of Kidney failure

The two major causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. So in order to maintain good and healthy kidneys it is absolutely necessary to take precautions in case you are a diabetic or suffering from high blood pressure. Other causes include cancer, kidney stones and abnormality of urinary tracts.

Symptoms in kidney infection:

Some of the common symptoms related to kidney disease are fever, chills, low back pain, upset digestive system, vomiting, feeling constant urge of urinating, blood in urine, inability to urinate, burning or painful sensation during urination .
