Ask a teenager, he or she will tell you the importance of having a heart. Heart is directly associated with romance for many of us in our virtual  life. But heart does much more than that in our real life, it does a thankless job of pumping blood all our life without blinking for a moment.  The moment it decides to take rest , rest assured you are almost gone from this earth. You are DEAD! 

Do we actually give importance and understand the value of our heart ? Are we taking enough precautions and relax ourselves so that it does not take rest ? Before discussing what we can do to keep our heart healthy, let us be clear about some basics and diseases associated with our heart.

The heart is tiny , muscular, hollow organ about the size of your fist. It performs the job of pumping of blood to all parts of the body. There are two major coronary arteries. The Right Coronary Artery and the Left Coronary Artery. These arteries supply blood rich in oxygen and other nutrients to all parts of the body. In order to ensure trouble free supply, these arteries must be open without any kind of blockages. 

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the single largest killer disease in the world. This disease occurs when the arteries get hardened mainly due to deposition of a fatty substance called cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels. 

What is Angina? 

Discomfort or chest pain resulting from lack of oxygen in a particular area of your heart muscle temporarily is called angina. It is the first symptom and warning that your heart muscle is not getting enough blood supply. 

What is Heart Attack? 

When oxygen rich blood flow completely STOPS due to blockage in a coronary artery, the heart has no other choice but to stop itself. This is called heart attack and causes permanent damage to an area of muscle. Survival depends both on the severity of the attack and time taken for treatment. 

Act before it is too late! 

You can definitely prevent this life-threatening heart attack provided you follow simple guidelines. Some of them are given below: 

  • No Smoking : You have to choose and act now. Either decide to live a long healthy life or enjoy few moments of ecstasy or high  by smoking and perish ahead of time. Smoking is one of worst invention of mankind. You name any disease; smoking does play a role in it.
  • Obesity:  By being obese, you are actually helping the bad  cholesterol to block your heart arteries. You have to involve yourself with some kind of  daily physical exercise like walking, swimming, jogging, basketball to control your weight.
  • High Blood pressure: Increase in blood pressure can damage the lining of the arteries, which in turn helps the bad cholesterol to creep into the walls of the arteries and stay happily causing damage to your heart. Have periodical tests and  exercise to maintain your blood pressure.
  • Alcohol: Excess intake of alcohol contributes to fat accumulation in your body. Be aware of your consumption of alcohol and if need be, drink moderately.

Remember you have only heart , while you can exchange it with your partner virtually in romance make sure you keep it in good shape in your real life. The secret lies in controlling your taste buds and other unnatural fantasies.
