How often have you observed doctors sounding an alarm bell when the cholesterol level is too high?

Let me put in some efforts to help you understand the level of cholesterol.

There are different types of cholesterol in the blood stream. A doctor usually recommends a simple blood test to find out the levels.

  • LDL or the low density lipoprotein is called the bad cholesterol. This type of fat has the ability to stick to plaque in the arteries and contributes to the hardening and clogging. With passage of time, the level when becomes too high it is an eminent danger ahead. If left unattended, it might lead to heart attacks, heart disease or stroke. Needless to say, controlling this cholesterol level will eliminate the unwanted risks.
  • HDL or the high density lipoprotein comes under the good category. The prime reason it being termed as benefic is because of its ability to remove the bad cholesterol from the blood stream to the liver from where it can be further thrown out of the body. Therefore, low level of HDL is actually not a good sign. One needs to have the standard level of HDL so that from time to time it helps in eliminating the LDL.
  • Another form of cholesterol called the triglycerides is also checked in the standard test. When the levels of these are high, again there is cause of worry and concern.

The cholesterol levels are measured in units of milligram per deciliter of blood or mg/dL. While your doctors decides the recommended levels according to your age and other factors, the overall reading of all the cholesterol should be under 200 mg/dL. Anything between 200 to 239 mg/dL is considered borderline. Above 240 mg/dL it is time to act immediately and definitely a cause for concern.
